  17. <p>Research suggests that drugs to lift the spirits may cause
  18. miscarriage
  19. </p>
  20. <p>     Although many young women of childbearing age are treated for
  21. depression, no one is sure if it is safe for them to take their
  22. needed medication during pregnancy. A new study in the Journal
  23. of the American Medical Association provides a mixed answer.
  24. Researchers followed women who became pregnant while receiving
  25. therapy--either with Prozac, a relatively new and extremely
  26. popular drug, or tricyclic antidepressants, an older class of
  27. medication. Women in both groups bore the same small risk of
  28. having children with serious birth defects--which was no
  29. higher than it is for women in the general population. But both
  30. groups of women on antidepressant medication showed abnormally
  31. high rates of miscarriage. More study is needed to determine
  32. whether the medication or the depression could be bringing
  33. pregnancies to a premature end.
